Overview: The mHealth Tanzania Public-Private Partnership (PPP) is an innovative partnership among CDC Tanzania, Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, the Elderly and Children, health NGOs and private sector companies, including mobile network operators. The partnership supports the achievement of PEPFAR goals and the Ministry’s initiatives, including the Government of Tanzania Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality and the Health Sector Strategic Plan. The partnership leverages economies of scale and pools expertise and resources from diverse partners that harness mobile phone technology, including USSD and SMS platforms, for sustainable and scalable public health programs. The partnership expands mutually beneficial collaborations with the private sector to develop sustainable PPPs that capitalize on private sector interest in mHealth for the aim of market development and access, corporate social responsibility and improved government relationships.

The partnership’s main goal is support the implementation of Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby Text Messaging Service (HPHB) (aka Wazazi Nipendeni locally in Kiswahili), which offers free and safe antenatal, motherhood and infant healthcare information to pregnant women, mothers, male supporters and general information seekers across Tanzania. HPHB drives health seeking-behavior among these target populations. The project is expanding to other health areas such as family planning and nutrition.


Cardno’s Role: Cardno is implementing partner of mHealth Tanzania PPP’s programs in-country. Cardno also provides PPP Management; Funds Management; Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting; Communications & Knowledge Management; Private Partner Identification; and Partnership Expansion services
